How an Oregon Website Management Company Created a Connection Way Beyond Digital
Everyone wants a solid, reliable connection to the digital world. But what if that connection was also part of building a better community and planet. Enter David and Angela Anderson of Canvas Host. Not only are they B Corp and 1% For the Planet certified, but they are a recently certified Benefit Corporation for Good. All of which means they are practitioners of the Triple Bottom Line of People, Planet and Profit. Want to know why they became Oregon’s 29th Benefit Company? Read on:
1. What motivated you to become a Benefit Company?
As an established B Corporation, we recognize the importance of external certifications for legitimacy and accountability. In 2012, we held several Green Drinks events in partnership with the Oregon Governor's office, Secretary of State, and local representatives in which Oregon benefit company legislation was first organized. We witnessed the bill passed into law and were one of the first 29 Oregon Benefit Companies to be formally recognized.
Years later, when Benefit Corporations for Good was established, we further recognized the importance of re-registering our benefit company status using a local certifier, as some of the national standards lack accountability and transparency in their certification.
2. Was it difficult getting internal support for moving toward this model?
We had 100% support from the beginning, and to this day are proud of this designation.
3. How long did it take you to officially become a Benefit Company?
Not long. As a Certified B Corporation, we already surpassed the requirements to become an Oregon Benefit Company. It was mostly a revisiting of the steps we had taken before, for prior certifications.
4. Have you seen any change in culture since you became a Benefit Company?
A greater emphasis has been placed, by our staff, in terms of the responsibilities for which they are tasked, to ensure everyone is living up to the mandates of a benefit company: From increased focus on quality, to more caring customer engagement, and greater patience when working with complex tasks.
5. Have you experienced any positive outcomes since becoming a Benefit Company?
We regularly speak with companies and community members that were drawn to our brand because we are a Benefit Company and B Corporation. It has increased our sales conversion and customer retention rates as well, though that was not a primary goal.
6. Would you recommend this business model to others? Why or why not?
Yes, if you believe in a better way of doing business, and ready to apply accountability to your mantra.
7. What is the most important trait to have as a conscientious leader of a Benefit Company?
To always consider the impact of a decision on your company, your staff, your community, and your environment, before profit. "Profit only" has no place in this business model.
8. What lessons have you learned in the process?
That we have so far to still go. That is the beauty of being a Benefit Company -- the path to sustainability and equitable leadership is eternal and ever-changing. It is a journey without a finish line.
9. Is being a Benefit Company part of your current brand message?
Absolutely. We proudly discuss our certifications throughout our marketing materials and brand presence.
10. What is the single best reason you'd give for another company/peer to become a Benefit Company?
The old way of doing business is at an end. It's time to step up and take on the world from a position of care, stewardship, and progressive mindset. From this vantage, you will absolutely see the world in a fresh light, and begin to appreciate business in an organic, natural method that treats quality over quantity, mission over metrics, and people over profit.
