You’re Either Growing or Dying. NOT.
Under a venerable cork tree in DeLaveaga Park in beautiful Santa Cruz, California.
It’s a phrase I’ve never quite agreed with.
To me, it represents a view of the business world that feels overly simplistic—black and white.
But the truth is, the business world like the world around us is filled with nuances.
It’s anything but black and white.
There’s a lot of grey.
From my experience helping small businesses strengthen their triple bottom line, I’ve come to believe there’s another factor at play.
I call it gestation.
Gestation is a period of development, reflection, and introspection.
It’s not about sitting idly by and doing nothing to grow revenue. It’s about conscientious leaders taking the time to assess where they’re at, what their next steps are, and how to approach growth in a more meaningful, sustainable way.
Put the accent on “meaningful, sustainable way.”
It is answering questions like how do we adapt to shifts in the market? How can we make our processes more environmentally friendly? How do we better serve our employees and communities?
These are the questions that don’t have a clear-cut answer in terms of growth or decline. They’re questions that invite businesses to reflect on how they can become more sustainable—in every sense of the word.
Because sustainable growth isn’t just about generating profit.
It’s about creating value that has a lasting impact—on our businesses, on our employees, and on the planet.
And in so doing, it helps breathe new life into the world we share.
