What Environmental Practices Does Benefit Corporation Certification Require?

Benefit Corporation leaders gathering at Happy Hour for Good.

Green/Environmental Practices is one of the 8 standards in BCFG certification, and it’s built around one core expectation: businesses should actively work to shrink their footprint, not just avoid making it worse.

What this standard evaluates

BCFG asks businesses to strive to reduce their carbon footprint at work and at home, demonstrated through:

  • Staff training on environmental practices

  • Incentivizing green adoption among team members

  • Participating in environmental initiatives

  • Establishing a formal sustainability policy

Why it matters

A lot of small businesses already do some of this informally, recycling, remote work, a bike to work incentive, without ever writing it down. This standard pushes businesses to formalize what’s already working and look for what else is possible, at work and at home.

Where does BCFG fit?

This is the clearest expression of the “planet” piece of BCFG’s Triple Bottom Line of people, planet, and profit. It’s the standard most directly focused on environmental impact.

Environmental impact isn’t bounded by state lines, so this standard applies the same way whether you’re certifying in Oregon or any other state or province.
