Which BCFG Standard Is Hardest to Meet?

Benefit Corporation leaders gathering at Happy Hour for Good.

There’s no official ranking, all 8 standards carry equal weight in certification. But if you ask which ones trip up small businesses most often, a pattern shows up: the standards that ask for formal structure tend to feel harder than the ones that just ask for good behavior.

The standards that ask for structure

Strategic Business Practices and Green/Environmental Practices both ask for something documented, an advisory council, a sustainability policy, rather than just a habit. A small business can be doing the right things informally for years without ever writing them down, and that’s usually the gap: not the practice, but the paperwork behind it.

Values of Benefit Corporations can feel similar, since it asks businesses to connect their purpose to a specific external framework (the UN SDGs) and their state’s legal requirements. This is more structure than most small businesses have built out on their own.

The standards that ask for consistency

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Community Engagement are less about one-time setup and more about sustained, ongoing effort, a line item in next year’s budget, continued learning, not a single initiative. Businesses that treat these as a project to finish, rather than an ongoing practice, tend to find them harder than expected.

It’s not about being perfect

None of this means you need every standard fully built out before you apply. BCFG certification evaluates where your business actually is, not a hypothetical ideal. If one standard feels like your weak spot, that’s common, not disqualifying. BCFG helps you strengthen that standard with actionable ideas.

Where does BCFG fit?

Every standard ties back to the same Triple Bottom Line of people, planet, and profit. The “hardest” standard for your business usually points to which of the three you’ve invested in least so far, which is useful information on its own.

This pattern holds regardless of which state or province you’re certifying in, the standards that require formal documentation tend to be the sticking point everywhere, not just in Oregon.
